Confidence Comes From Competence

Sep 25, 2026 · Coach Teddy Dupay

Confidence comes from competence. You cannot talk a player into confidence. You cannot buy it, post it, or praise it into existence. It's the natural result of getting genuinely good at something hard.

That's why empty praise backfires. When you tell a player they're amazing at something they know they haven't earned, they don't feel more confident — they feel more anxious. Now they have to protect a reputation that isn't real. Real confidence is quiet. It comes from a player looking at their own two hands and knowing, from a thousand reps, that they can do the thing. Build the competence, and confidence shows up on its own.

Fun is Always #1.

This leads to one of the most important distinctions I teach players and parents both: character is who you are; reputation is what people say about you. Take care of both — but be wise about which one you serve. When you chase reputation, you become reactive. When you build character, you become unshakable.

A player anchored in character — who they are when no one is watching — can handle criticism, handle losing, and handle being doubted. A player anchored in reputation is at the mercy of the last thing anyone said about them. One of those players sleeps well at night. Help yours be that one.

At TDBA, we build real skill. Not just feel-good moments — actual competence that players can feel. That's where the confidence comes from, and it doesn't leave. We do that through individual classes, private lessons, summer camps, and membership.

Come see it

You don't have to commit to anything to find out whether your player likes it. Come early and jump in, or stay late and play more.
