The Bread-and-Butter Move: How Mastery Is Actually Built

Oct 23, 2026 · Coach Teddy Dupay

Greatness is not built by being a little good at everything. It's built by being unstoppable at one thing, then adding the next, and the next. We develop a bread-and-butter move and go to work on it.

We start by imitating other players' signature moves on purpose. That does two things: it forces a player to decide what kind of player they want to be, and it trains them to hunt for tendencies — their own and everyone else's. While they're locked in on that hunt, everything else gets filed away too. They're learning far more than the one move.

Here's how deep this goes. I practiced shots from specific spots on the floor I'd almost never use — unless I ended up there in trouble with no other option. Some moves only live in certain places. So I'd master a shot from a strange angle and keep it in the bag, untouched, until the one day I might need it. I got so good at my go-to spots that the whole court eventually felt like home. That didn't happen in games. It happened shot by shot in an empty gym.

Fun is Always #1.

Here's the bigger lesson underneath all of this. Mastery is built in private, rep by rep, long before it shows up in public. The crowd sees the impossible shot in the game. They never see the thousand quiet afternoons that made it ordinary. When your player wants to quit because they're not great yet, you're not watching someone without talent. You're watching someone who hasn't yet done the unglamorous work that turns hard into easy. Protect those private hours and make them feel worth it.

The mechanics of scoring? I can teach those in twenty minutes. The hard part — the part that takes a lifetime — is the inner work: listening, patience, courage, character. That's what we're really building at TDBA, and it's what your player will carry long after they stop playing.

We build that through individual classes, private lessons, summer camps, and membership.

Come see it

You don't have to commit to anything to find out whether your player likes it. Come early and jump in, or stay late and play more.
